Corey “Kaare” Engen was the youngest of the three famed Engen brothers. He was born in Mjondallen, Norway in 1916 and came to America in the early 1930s. Over his competitive career, Corey amassed more than five hundred medals and trophies in all skiing disciplines (jumping, cross-country, downhill, slalom, and giant slalom). He was captain of the 1948 U.S. Olympic ski-jumping team and placed third in the jumping portion of the Olympic classic combined event held at St. Moritz, Switzerland.
Corey often taught as a guest instructor in the Alf Engen Ski School and the Deseret News Ski School at Alta during the years between 1950 and 1970. He also directed the ski schools at Snowbasin, Utah and Brundage Mountain in McCall, Idaho, teaching countless skiers. He was a two-time winner of the Alta Snow Cup race in the mid 1940s and had a staring role with his brothers in the 20th Century Fox movie, titled Ski Aces, which was filmed at Alta in 1945. In the late 1940s, Corey and his brothers were the primary builders of the Landes Memorial Ski Jumping Hill at Alta and he participated with Alf and Sverre in the hill’s dedication ceremony jump in 1948. He was elected to the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame in 1973 and passed away in May 2006 at age 90.
